Postbox Prize Draw

The Postbox Prize Draw is a free monthly competition for postal entrants whose chosen competition sold out before their entry could be allocated a ticket. These are its full terms.

Who is entered
Each month's draw includes every valid free postal entry that reached us by the advertised closing date of the competition it named, where that competition had already allocated all its tickets. Entry is automatic. You cannot buy an entry, and you cannot enter the Postbox Prize Draw directly.

Eligibility
You must be aged 18 or over and resident in the United Kingdom.
Entry limit
One entry for each email address counts in each month's draw. Further entries from the same email address in that month are not entered, and we do not email about them.
Closing date
Entries for each month close at 7:00 PM on the last day of each month. An entry belongs to the month in which we record it. An entry we record at or after 7:00 PM on the last day of a month goes into the next month's draw.

Number of winners
We draw one winner for every 20 entries in the month, rounded up, with at least one winner. For example, 9 entries give 1 winner, 40 entries give 2 winners, and 47 entries give 3 winners.
We work out the number of winners first, then draw that many different entries at random. Each entry has an equal chance of being drawn.

Draw
The draw runs automatically on the 1st of the following month, and always within 7 days of entries closing.
Before entries close, we publish a SHA-256 hash of the secret random seed for that month. After the draw, we publish the seed, the number of entries, the number of winners, the winning entry numbers and all entry numbers, so anyone can check the result. The results and the method for checking them are shown later on this page.

Prize
Each winner receives £20, paid as Account Credit to the account the entry is recorded against. If you entered without an account, your entry is recorded against the internal guest account created from the details on your entry. The prize is a fixed amount for each winner and does not depend on the number of entries received.
Account Credit can be used for eligible future entries, or withdrawn under the withdrawal rules in the Customer Agreement.

Winners
We only email winners. If you do not receive an email within 7 days of entries closing, your entry has not won.
We email each winner at the address on their entry. If the entry was recorded against an internal guest account, that account becomes a full account, and the email includes a link to set a password so the winner can use the prize. If the entry was recorded against an existing account, the winner signs in with their existing password. Winners may be asked to verify their identity, age and address before Account Credit is withdrawn. We may publish limited winner information as described in the Customer Agreement.

Storing and shredding entries
Postal correspondence for the Postbox Prize Draw is stored by month and securely shredded 60 days after the final accepted winner for that month is found, unless a legal hold requires longer retention.
Other terms
The Customer Agreement applies to the Postbox Prize Draw where these terms do not say otherwise. If the two conflict, these terms apply.

How to check a draw
Before entries close, we publish the SHA-256 hash of that month's secret seed. After the draw, we publish the seed itself.
- Check that the SHA-256 hash of the published seed matches the seed hash published before entries closed.
- For each entry number, calculate HMAC-SHA256 using the seed as the key and the entry number as the message.
- Sort the entry numbers by that value, lowest first. If two values match, the lower entry number comes first.
- The first entries in that order, up to the published number of winners, are the winners.
The entries hash is the SHA-256 hash of all entry numbers in ascending order, one per line. Your entry number is in the email we sent when we added your entry to the draw.
